Coccivac®-B

COCCIVAC®-B is a live oocyst vaccine isolated from chickens, prepared from anticoccidial-sensitive strains of Eimeria acervulina, E. mivati, E. maxima and E. tenella. It may be administered to chickens at one day of age via spray cabinet/eye spray or orally on the feed at 1-3 days of age.

Composition
Live Oocysts, Chicken Isolates from (Eimeria acervulina, E. mivati, E. maxima, E. tenella)

Formulation
A freeze-dried pellet.

Indications
For vaccination of healthy chickens at one day of age or older as an aid in preventing performance losses or mortality due to coccidiosis.

How to Vaccinate
FEED SPRAY ADMINISTRATION:

  1. Do not use any medicated drinking water or water disinfectant 24 hours before and after vaccination or during vaccination.
  2. Feed sprinkled on paper under the feed line increases the exposure of chicks to the vaccine.
  3. Dilute the vaccine at a ratio of 1000 doses/400 ml. of nonchlorinated water. Mix well and place in a clean garden type pressure sprayer.
  4. Spray the diluted vaccine over the surface of the feed. Agitate the sprayer during administration.
  5. For best results, the vaccine should be sprayed on all of the feed.
  6. Avoid wetting the feed. Proper application will only dampen the surface of the feed.
  7. Allow the chicks sufficient time to ingest the oocysts on the feed before placing more feed in the pans or on the paper.

DRINKING WATER ADMINISTRATION:

  1. Discontinue the use of any medicated drinking water or disinfectants 24 hours before and after vaccination, and during vaccination.
  2. Thoroughly rinse waterers with CLEAN WATER ONLY. Do not use cleaning agents or disinfectants at this time. Be sure you have provided enough waterers to permit all chickens to drink at the same time.
  3. Chickens should be slightly water starved to encourage them to drink when the vaccine is given. The idea is to make them thirsty WITHOUT CAUSING STRESS.
Remove all water vessels from pens and withhold water as listed below. During HOT weather — from 2-4 hours but not more than 4 hours. During COOL weather — from 4-6 hours.
  4. Measure 2.5 gallons of drinking water into pail or tub for each 1,000 doses of vaccine.
  5. Put suspending agent into the water and stir. Allow to set for 1-2 minutes then mix well.
  6. Open vial of vaccine and pour contents into water-suspending agent mixture.
Rinse vaccine vial well with the mixture and stir thoroughly.
  7. Place waterers in all parts of the brooder house as all chicks must drink the water to become vaccinated.
  8. Keep vaccine-treated water before chicks until it is consumed.

SPRAY CABINET ADMINISTRATION:
For vaccination of chicks at one day of age.

  1. Use diluted vaccine as directed for each coarse spray vaccinating machine. When using an SPAH spray cabinet, we recommend diluting 1000 doses of vaccine to 210 ml.
  2. Add the vaccine solution to pressure reservoir of the spray apparatus.
  3. Prime and adjust the machine as indicated on the machine operating instructions.
  4. Place boxes holding 100 chickens each on the conveyor belt or in machine.
    Activate the spray head.
  5. Using an SPAH machine, each box of 100 chicks receives 21 ml. of vaccine solution.

EYE SPRAY ADMINISTRATION:
For vaccination of chicks at one day of age. For each 1000 doses of vaccine, dilute in 30 ml. of non-chlorinated water. Each chick should receive 0.03 milliliters of this product. Full directions for use of the Biojector Immunizer are available from the company.

General Information
ONLY VACCINATE HEALTHY CHICKS.

  • Vaccine can be administered in the drinking water between 4-14 days of age (preferably at 10 days). Sprayed on the feed at 1-3 days of age; or by eye spray or spray cabinet routes at 1 day of age.
  • Chicks must have access to their droppings as reinfection is required to give immunity. Therefore, chicks started on paper, or raised in batteries or on wire, should be put on litter no later than the 4th day post-vaccination.
  • Moisture is necessary for oocysts to sporulate.
  • If there is a noticeable reaction from the vaccine, it usually occurs between the 12th and 14th days post-vaccination. Do not treat coccidiosis unless mortality or severe morbidity is directly attributable to coccidiosis. When positive diagnosis is made, treat with sulfaquinoxaline, sulfamethazine or amprolium in the drinking water. Treatment for 48 hours using the manufacturers lowest recommended level, will usually be adequate.
  • Use entire contents of each vial when first opened.
  • Store vaccine in refrigerator under 45°F (7°C).
  • Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.

Caution
DO NOT FREEZE. Burn container and all unused contents.
STORE IN REFRIGERATOR UNDER 45°F (7° C).
USING MEDICATED FEEDS:
COCCIVAC® is not recommended for use on chicks receiving a feed containing a coccidiostat or high levels of antibiotic. After vaccination, it may become necessary to use high levels of drugs for treatment of disease conditions other than coccidiosis.
If such drugs, with coccidiostatic activity, are used during the first or second week post-vaccination with COCCIVAC® revaccination with COCCIVAC® is recommended.
The capacity of this vaccine to produce satisfactory results depends on many factors, including but not limited to conditions of storage and handling by the user, administration of the vaccine, health and responsiveness of individual chickens and degree of field exposure. Therefore, directions for use should be followed carefully.
NOTICE
All Schering-Plough Animal Health vaccines released for sale meet the requirements of the licensing authority (U.S. Department of Agriculture) in regard to safety, purity, potency and the capacity to immunize normal, susceptible chickens.

Records
Keep a record of vaccine type, quantity, serial number and expiration date; the date and time of vaccination; the number, age, breed, and location of the chickens; names of operators performing the vaccination and any observed reactions.
